Minutes of the April 18, 2000 Meeting

Present: W. Morrison, C. Morrison, T. Koenig, S. Heinrich, MMS Principal T. Levesque, MES Principal K. Custer, and Assistant Superintendent M. Chiafery.
Excused: M. Morrison and J. Heinrich

S. Heinrich called the meeting to order at 7:35 PM. He explained the sole purpose of the meeting was to tour the entire Mastricola complex.

The tour started at the elementary school with K. Custer as tour guide. Some of the issues highlighted were security issues in the APR (it is possible to access without going by any main office), classrooms are at least 900 square feet, there is water and/or toilets in the classrooms in the older section - the primary wing, most classrooms do not have storage space/closet space; in fact, there is little general storage space and the core facilities - offices, APR, art room, library, music room, etc. - are smaller than those at the Ferry schools.

The tour moved to the middle school with T. Levesque as tour guide. Some of the issues highlighted were lack of adequate equipment storage space in the gymnasium, shower stalls that are seldom used, location of nurses' office in relation to main office, bathrooms that have been converted into storage space for the maintenance department, yearly need to relocate/reassign rooms, lack of water and restrooms in new wing, lack of storage in classrooms and lack of general storage, classrooms vary widely in size, inadequate or lack of teacher's workrooms, and the School District Maintenance Department takes up 2+ classrooms. Due to the late hour, it was decided to tour the second floor only on May 2nd at 7:00 PM.

T. Koenig asked about curriculum differences between two 5-8 middle schools and a 5-6 and a 7-8 school. It was suggested that the PBC be given a copy of the School Board charge to the leadership team as well as look into the Code of Administrative Rules regarding curriculum specifics for grades 5-8.

M. Chiafery told the PBC that the leadership team supports the implementation of kindergarten. She indicated that they feel it is educationally the right thing to do. Further, the leadership team feels that kindergarten should be included as part of any space concept in light of the increased state building construction aid for it. She also suggested that the PBC consider the continuing costs of implementing kindergarten.

On a motion from C. Morrison, seconded by T. Koenig, the meeting was adjourned at 10:10 P.M.
