Minutes of the July 14, 1998 Meeting

Present: All members and J. Flis, School Board liaison

S. Heinrich called the meeting to order at 7:06 P.M.

Approval of Minutes

S. Heinrich asked the committee to consider approving prior meeting minutes as the final report the committee was drafting would be based on those minutes and minutes had not been approved since April. The consensus of the committee was to defer approval of minutes until the end of the meeting as time permitted.

Final Report on High School Space Needs

J. Flis and W. Morrison brought up the need for space in the addition for a wiring closet to meet technology needs. They suggested that a 10' X 10' space be included in the addition which would accommodate this need as well as allow space to consolidate some of the NT servers currently in the building.

S. Heinrich asked the committee to make specific recommendations on other core areas.

  1. Cafeteria - no recommendation at present.
  2. Nurse - put on an outside wall, quote the accreditation report regarding the cramped facility and the need to provide an adequate space. The committee felt further professional assistance was needed to determine the design of an adequate facility. Using the utilization inventory report, they felt that 50% additional space or 300 square feet was a starting point.
  3. Library - the space needs report issued by Rick Walker notes that the library has had a 16 1/2% increase in usage. The facility also has storage needs. The committee suggested that 20% of current library space is about 1200 square feet. This space could be found by expanding into two of the three following rooms: ISA, C-251 and C-249. The committee felt that consideration be given to consolidating the District Library Office into the third room.
  4. Boiler Room - the current boiler will have to be evaluated to see if it can handle the new addition. If a new boiler is needed, the committee felt that approximately 500 square feet of space would be needed to accommodate this need.
  5. Maintenance Closets and Lavatories - will be needed. The committee felt the architect would include them without specific recommendations.
  6. Office Space - though the administration did not complain about office space being inadequate, members of the committee felt the design of the main office was inefficient. They decided to suggest adding an additional 300 square feet and re-arranging/re-allocating current space. There were suggestions to move the Assistant Principals to this new space.

The committee discussed a two story versus a three story adition and came to no decision about which choice was recommended.

The committee discussed the possibility of including the Superintendent's offices in the addition. They decided to recommend consideration of incorporating the Superintendent's offices in the addition. They felt this would provide more efficient use of the land space at the high school, as well as provide a needed conference room and vault area for the Superintendent. It was suggested that the current basement hole might be included under the addition and could be used for storage and the vault.

In conjunction with the Superintendent's office, the committee discussed location of the addition. They agreed that D. Miller's suggestion of putting the addition of Guidance, toward the Superintendent's office was also a good use of space and provided space for future options.

The committee then moved to making specific changes in the draft report.

On a motion from S. Heinrich, seconded by W. Morrison, the committee voted unanimously to approve the final report on high school space needs as discussed during the meeting.

Discussion turned to specific recommendations about an auditorium. On a motion from S. Heinrich, seconded by W. Morrison, the committee voted 3-1-2 to recommend the district build an 800 seat auditorium which would be proposed as a separate warrant article.

On a motion from W. Morrison, seconded by M. Morrison, the committee voted unanimously to adjourn at 11:10 P.M.

Respectfully submitted,
