Minutes of the November 20, 2001 Meeting

Present: All members

The meeting was called to order at 7:10 by W. Morrison who announced that a quorum had not been possible on November 14th so no meeting was held.

W. Morrison told the committee the report due date has been extended until December 17th. He reported that he had been in contact with Marge Chiafery regarding the information needed to complete the School Board charge and that it may not be possible for the committee to have the report finished for December 3rd. M. Chiafery was concerned that the committee was focusing more on curriculum issues than on the specifics of the charge. She requested that the committee formulate a list of questions which would be given to the administrative team at a meeting on Friday.

The committee came up with the following questions and comments which W. Morrison will re-work as needed:

  1. Why were 13 "teams" suggested? (Population projections indicate that only 12 teams are needed...further one grade would have 6 clusters and one 7. Why not the same for each cluster?)
  2. Would it make good educational sense to give each team two regular classrooms and one large classroom (with water where the Science teacher for the team will be based) rather than give each team three regular classrooms and a large space that will be shared with another team?
  3. Are 4 music classrooms needed in an upper elementary school? We can understand the need for 1 large multi purpose space and maybe practice rooms - but the current proposal shows a total of four "rooms" are designated for music?
  4. How often will students be having the various specials (Art, Computer, Music and PE) at the upper elementary school? This will determines how much space must be allocated, i.e. need for one room vs. multiple rooms.
  5. Are there any other "overall" renovations to MMS that need to be included in the plan? Shirley indicated that no one asked her for her thoughts on what needs to be done to MMS - and she suggested windows need to be looked at. So, is there anything else that Tom L., Shirley or an architect might recommend?
  6. Do we have a better idea of exactly what/how much of plumbing, HVAC, asbestos tile, electrical, sprinkler, etc. actually needs to be done? Is there anything we thought might be needed that might not be needed?
  7. What job functions currently take place in the Shirley's current open space and what additional job functions would be included in the expanded space that Shirley has requested? Welding, Storage, Vehicle maintenance, Woodworking, etc.
  8. Are there any concerns about chemical (cleaners, fertilizer, oil, etc) storage?
  9. Are there other "groups" or district wide offices that could utilize some of the upstairs office space in the Maintenance Building?
  10. Would there be a need to move Maintenance IF we can find (and renovate) enough properly designed space for Shirley at MMS?
  11. How much space at MMS is Shirley currently using to store district-wide maintenance items? And how much more storage space does Shirley envision needing?
  12. Do we need a second gym to meet state standards for PE in a middle school?

After formulating the list of questions, the committee worked on editing a draft of their report.

On a motion from S. Heinrich, seconded by C. Morrison, the committee voted unanimously to adjourn at 10 PM.

Respectfully submitted,
