Minutes of the November 12, 1997 Meeting

Present: All Members

The meeting was called to order at 7:33 by S. Heinrich.

Approval of Minutes

On a motion from T. Koenig, seconded by M. Morrison, the minutes of October 28, 1997 were approved 5-0-1 with the following corrections: Page 2: addition to RFS as shown would create traffic and parking problems" and Page 3: "a new school would need voter support."

Traffic & Parking Recommendations

There were several minor corrections made to the text of the proposal to be presented at the School Board Meeting on November 17, 1997. The clerk was asked to be certain that the appropriate audio visual equipment and extension cords would be available. It was noted that this is a comprehensive plan for traffic flow and parking at all schools including proposed athletic field improvements with a focus on safety. The committee was reminded that the School Board meeting would be held at Thorntons Ferry School at 7:30 P.M. following a 6:30 P.M. reception and building tour to which the public was invited.

On a motion from B. Triolo, seconded by W. Morrison, the Traffic & Parking Recommendations (see attached copy) were approved unanimously.

Kindergarten

The committee felt that the best way to continue working on the kindergarten issue was to brainstorm ideas.

By consensus the committee decided to request information from several local surveyors regarding what a survey involves, what a feasibility study involves, what information is currently available and what information is needed in order to make recommendations about currently owned district properties. They will also request information on potential costs and contingencies. It was suggested that the committee hold a meeting with at least two surveyors on November 25, 1997 for this sole purpose.

T. Koenig suggested that the committee notify the School Board that the PBC feels that another building is the best option but needs additional time and information in order to prepare a viable plan. W. Morrison noted that should the district need to get a waiver for the final plan, the waiver should be pursued for tentative approval before going before the voters. B. Triolo brought up the projected population increase for Merrimack and felt that any plan for kindergarten should consider the current and projected space problems at the high school. He felt the committee should investigate the costs involved in implementing some nontraditional solutions to solving space needs at the high school only: year round school, double sessions and free standing "trailers." He also suggested that the committee investigate district wide year round school. Further, he suggested that the committee not propose additional space that creates rather than solves problems.

On a motion from B. Triolo, seconded by M. Morrison, the committee voted unanimously to adjourn at 9:47 P.M.

Respectively submitted,
