The Merrimack School District has established a daily 90 minute block of uninterrupted reading instruction. Each grade level has been assigned a daily block of time when students will be involved in direct instruction, guided practice, and independent application of reading strategies. Teachers will meet in whole class as well as small, flexible groupings using a variety of reading materials to teach curriculum goals.

Research shows that when students in classrooms where they are expected to be successful readers and writers, who talk, read, and write daily, outperform students in classrooms where these activities are less prevalent.
