Hello Readers
-
We Celebrate Language Arts at JMUES!
Students have many language arts opportunities during 5th and 6th grade at JMUES.
READING
Readers will select just-right books for Independent Daily Reading and have opportunities to engage in conferring experiences with teachers and peers. Students will participate in literature study groups including guided reading, skills-based reading experiences, and/or book clubs. Teachers will read aloud to students from a variety of mentor text and students will be able to discuss and share ideas with peers.
WRITING
Writers will have opportunities to respond to reading experiences through writing. Additionally, students will benefit from exposure to a variety of mentor text read-aloud experiences. Writers will learn from the work of great children’s authors. JMUES writers will complete units of study in, argument, information, and narrative writing.
WORD WORK
Word study teaches students to examine words to discover the regularities, patterns, and conventions of the English language in order to read, write, and spell. It increases specific knowledge of words for spelling and meaning of individual words. Students at JMUES benefit from teacher-directed word study provided in small differentiated learning groups.
