First grade

  • Art classes are full of fun and learning!  I work on creating a setting where students are comfortable to experiment and try new things, while learning about Art.  I promote the idea that Art is not just for those traditionally talented individuals, as I believe all students have an inner artist.

It is helpful for families to prepare their child for Art classes by making sure they wear clothing that is suitable for using any type of materials.  Students will use a variety of art media, some of which can be messy.  I encourage students to avoid wearing their favorite and/or dressiest clothing on the days they have Art.

Students in first grade will spend time learning what is expected in the Art Room.  The application of Respect, Responsibility and Safety is continually reinforced as they adjust to the new space of theArt Room

First graders will learn about art elements, such as line, shape, color and texture, and about art principals such as pattern and balance.   They will work on developing their fine motor skills through a variety of activities, and by using a range of materials.

Students will also visually explore an array of artwork.  They will be introduced to famous artists, and learn about the lives and motivation of those artists. Art classes will also give students an awareness of how art can be found everywhere in our environment!

Each year James Mastricola holds its annual Art Show, where every student has at least two pieces of artwork displayed throughout the school. The date for this year's Art Show can be found on the school calendar.
