Introduction
Welcome to room 223! My name is Mrs. Lamare and I am going to be your teacher this year. First let me say, welcome to sixth grade! I am very excited to be working with all of you this year! Here at J.M.U.E.S I have worked two years as a special education teacher and eight years as a classroom teacher. That means this is my ninth year of having a classroom and my eleventh year here at J.M.U.E.S. Wow, what a decade!
Let me tell you a little bit more about myself. I grew up in Massachusetts right outside of Boston in a city called Quincy. I went to Rivier College in Nashua, NH and graduated in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary and special education. In 2009 I completed a Master’s degree program based out of Lesley University in Cambridge, MA and earned a Masters in Education with a specialization in Literacy.
We are going to have a great year! I am looking forward to developing our classroom community and establishing our class rules and expectations. This year we will focus on organizational skills, study skills, time management and responsibility while learning some great information.
Let’s start the year out with a positive attitude and a smile. We will all work together to be successful, responsible students while I help you to become a lifelong learner! Let’s have a great year!
PowerGrade/Grading Procedures
Grades will be inputted into PowerGrade on a weekly basis. Students who do not pass in assignments will have an empty set of brackets until their assignment is turned in. Assignments will lose 5 points per day of being late. A zero will be put in place of a missing assignment if it is not turned in within a month. A short comment may be attached to the assignment; this will be indicated by a red grade. You can access this comment by simply clicking on it. Grades are based on a 100 point scale. Grades are weighted differently depending on whether they are class work, homework, tests or quizzes; therefore tests will be worth more than quizzes and quizzes will be worth more than class work and homework. Grades are also largely influenced by classroom participation and effort put into work. Please remember that your child is more than just their number grade on Power School; 5th grade level students need to be looked at holistically and therefore students are graded on more than just the number of correct answers. Participation and effort grades will be given out at least once a quarter to indicate student's level of involvement in daily class subjects.
Friday Folders
Students will be using a Friday Communication Folder. Folders will go home on Friday and will have a side for This Week’s News/notices that need to be returned to school and another side for the work from the week. This Week’s News papers will be filled out and left in the folder for the remainder of the quarter and any notices that require signing and returning will be brought back to school on Monday. The work from the week will go home and can then be taken out of the folder and left at home. Please let me know of any questions you might have about this system in hopes of it working as smoothly as possible.
Scholastic Book Orders
Scholastic Book Orders are a great way to get cost effective books for your child while helping to build our classroom library at the same time. I will be sending home the Scholastic catalogs at the beginning of each month and orders will need to be submitted by the middle of the month to ensure orders will be received before the end of the month. Every dollar you spend goes to earning points in which I can use to buy new books for the classroom. Book orders may now be placed on- line. As an added incentive, any orders placed on- line result in a free book for our classroom. Please enter the following activation code into the scholastic website to order books from the convenience of your own home: GQN43
