DAILY EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENTS
BE PREPARED, BE RESPONSIBLE, BEHAVE!
BE PREPARED TO PARTICIPATE
Students are required to:
- Arrive to class on time, ready to participate and learn!
- Bring 3-ring binder, science notebook, completed homework, and writing tools to class (a list of specific materials needed for each class will be posted).
- Maintain a section of your binder for science. This section will include homework, quizzes, lab work, exams, and all other written work.
- Keep any science work removed from your binder in a folder at home until the end of the year.
BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR LEARNING
It is the student’s responsibility to:
- Speak to me during school if help is needed. I am available after school most days for extra help.
- Ask for class notes and assignments given during an absence.
- Do your best on all assignments and work independently, asking for help only after you have given it your best effort.
- Complete all assignments in a neat manner – not sloppy. If your penmanship is hard to read, type!
- Complete all assignments on time.
BEHAVE
Students are required to:
- RESPECT teachers, classmates, the school and themselves!
- LISTEN while others are speaking.
- Use common courtesy with all classmates.
- Follow the Lab Safety Agreement while in a lab setting.
ASSESSMENT
- Final grades are determined by the number of points achieved. Each assessment is given a different value depending upon the information being provided. However, points are typically assigned as:
- Homework is worth 5 points.
- Quizzes are worth 25 points.
- Exams are worth 100 points.
- Lab work and projects are worth 100 points.
- Formal assessments, such as lab work and projects, may be evaluated based on the following grading system. In this case rubrics will be provided.
- E – Exceeds the standard = 100 points
- M – Meets the standard = 85 points
- P – Partially meets the standard = 70 points
- N – Incomplete or not yet met the standard = 55 points
- If work is more than 2 weeks late, it may receive 0 points
- If work is not turned in on time, it may receive 0 points in PowerSchool until it has been turned in.
- Students have the option to retake formal assessments such as lab reports, projects or exams through a retake process described in class. Any retakes may be completed for full credit.
HOMEWORK
- Nightly homework is weighted as points in your total grade and is based on your effort.
- Formal assignments (labs, projects) that require homework time will be assessed using a rubric associated with those assignments.
- Homework may be assigned Monday through Friday.
- Assignments should take approximately 20 minutes per night. This does not include studying for tests, writing lab reports, or completing larger projects.
- If students choose not to do their homework, I will talk with them to make sure they understand the assignment and help the student find a time when they can complete the work.
- Extra credit work will only be given when a student has made an effort to complete all other work.
MY GOALS AND EXPECTATIONS FOR SCIENCE:
- To provide a safe atmosphere for scientific, intuitive and creative thinking.
- To provide a safe environment for students to explore and “fail” before finding success.
- To help students learn to use cooperative learning skills in the laboratory and classroom setting.
- To create an environment where students learn and practice standard safety measures in the lab.
- To have each student take full responsibility for his/her actions and choices made.
