Algebra 2 provides students with an opportunity for further study of topics from Algebra 1 as well as an introduction to the complex number system, matrices and their applications, and arithmetic and geometric series. Emphasis is given to the representation of a variety of functions as equations, tables of values, and graphs. Functions to be studied include linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, radical, rational, polynomial, and absolute value.  Additionally, students will learn how to solve equations related to the functions noted above. Students will also learn how to collect, organize and represent both univariate and bivariate data.

Although the content of this course is the same as that of the College Prep course, this course is intended for students who have consistently exhibited a strong mathematical aptitude.  Expectations relative to quality of work, depth of understanding, and independent learning are higher in this course than the Comprehensive course. Additional topics covered in Honors include sequences and series, a deeper understanding of functions, more use of graphing calculators, and more focus on real world applications. This course requires a summer project.

Prerequisite: Geometry with a “B” average or Honors with a “B-” average. Students with lower averages must petition to get into this course.
