PE AND RECESS
-
"A CHILD REMINDS US THAT PLAYTIME IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF OUR DAILY ROUTINE"
The Merrimack District Handbook states:
" A child well enough to attend school is well enough to attend all activities"
We realize there are times when students with serious or chronic health conditions may need modifications in their program.
- Notify the nurse and PE teacher if your child has had a recent injury, serious illness, sutures, or surgery.
- A note from your Medical Provider should state what accommodations are requested in the school environment. The note should describe the child's condition, the type of restriction or modification, (i.e. no Pe and /or recess) , the duration of the modifications, and if medication will be needed. "Modified activity" should specify what activities should be avoided.
- A follow-up note from the physician after the initial phase of accommodations has expired may be required. For example, after a cast is removed, activity modifications may still be prescribed by the attending physician.
- Assistive devices such as crutches, wheelchairs, etc. are not provided by the school district. These should be prescribed by a physician. Instruction in the use of an assistive device should be reviewed with the medical provider before the child returns to school.
